Tam Coc Holiday Hotel & Spa sits in Van Lam village, in Ninh Hai commune of the Hoa Lu district, right in the middle of the Tam Coc scenic area of Ninh Binh province in northern Vietnam. This is one of the country's most beautiful landscapes, a mosaic of towering limestone karsts, caves, pagodas and rice paddies often called "Ha Long Bay on land". The hotel is just steps from the Tam Coc boat pier, so the area's headline experience is right on the doorstep.
The classic thing to do is the Tam Coc boat tour: rowers, often using their feet, guide small sampans along the Ngo Dong River through three river caves and between the karsts, especially magical during the rice harvest. Within a couple of kilometres you'll find the tiered Bich Dong Pagoda built into the cliffside, and the famous Mua Cave viewpoint, whose roughly 500 dragon-lined steps reward you with a sweeping panorama of the winding river and paddies below. The larger Trang An boat route, Hoa Lu Ancient Capital and Thung Nham Bird Park are all short drives away, and Cuc Phuong National Park lies further west.
Getting here is straightforward: Ninh Binh train station is around 6 km away (about a 10-minute drive), and Hanoi is roughly 100 km to the north, a 1.5 to 2-hour drive by car or limousine van. Cafés and local restaurants line the lanes around the pier within a few minutes' walk. The most spectacular time to visit is the rice season, when the paddies turn golden from late May to early June, though spring and autumn offer pleasant weather too. Bear in mind the boat tour depends on the river's water level, and there is no parking at the hotel itself.
